On Sunday, July 20, at the “Battleground” pay-per-view, 20 WWE Superstars competed in a battle royal to crown a new Intercontinental Champion. One noticeable change was made in regards to the competitors of the match, as Damien Sandow replaced Rob Van Dam.

In the match, The Miz would claim the Intercontinental Championship. Throughout the entire match, Miz spent more time outside of the ring than in it. On numerous occasions Miz exited the ring through the second rope, waiting for his opportunity to strike.

Towards the latter stages of the match, two men remained in the ring: Sheamus and Dolph Ziggler. Ziggler was able to prevail in a lengthy encounter with the “Celtic Warrior,” eliminating him from the match. However, Miz quickly entered the ring and eliminated Ziggler, claiming the Intercontinental Championship.

Afterwards, Miz received the title from former champion Bad News Barrett. Miz is now a three-time Intercontinental Champion. Many were surprised, as Miz was not the popular choice. In fact, none of the Wrestling Rumors staff picked him to win the match.

Editor’s Note

Overall, this match was a disappointment. There were many sloppy maneuvers, and not many fans were pleased with the winner of the bout. It may lead to a Sheamus vs. Miz unification match at “SummerSlam,” but I still think a better star could have been chosen to face Sheamus.
