The recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter from Dave Meltzer hit on the fallout from WWE’s 2015 “Royal Rumble” pay-per-view on Sunday, Jan. 25. Within the newsletter, Meltzer noted that a prominent WWE star turned down an offer for a surprise appearance in the 30-man Royal Rumble match, which was won by Roman Reigns.
According to the newsletter, WWE inquired Chris Jericho about an appearance in the Royal Rumble match on Monday, Jan. 19. However, “Y2J” politely declined WWE’s offer that day, believing that his return to television should mean more and not be a one-off.
Despite already working a number of WWE live events in 2015, which will substantially increase through February and March, Jericho is not expected to return to WWE programming any time soon to work WrestleMania 31.
Jericho last wrestled for WWE at the 2014 “Night of Champions” pay-per-view. At the event, Jericho lost to “The Viper” Randy Orton. Since then, Jericho has made sporadic appearances on WWE programming, serving twice as the special guest authority figure, in addition to hosting his in-ring “Highlight Reel” show on numerous occasions.
Editor’s Note
While his surprise appearance would have been great, I agree with Jericho. I think it is best to make Jericho’s return to WWE programming mean a lot more.
