It’s possible that WWE is looking at hiring a new play-by-play guy for SmackDown, as they recently mutually parted ways with Mauro Ranallo. For now, Tom Phillips has taken Mauro’s seat, but there’s a chance that they’re talking to someone else about the role, and if you follow MMA, you know exactly who this man is.

On Monday’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer was asked if WWE has reached out to ex-UFC play-by-play man Mike Goldberg, who wasn’t re-signed by the company following their sale last year.

“I don’t know that there’s anything to [the Mike Goldberg to WWE rumor] at all. The only thing I know is that the story that came out mentioned something about how Jim Ross is pushing for it.

“What spot [would he fill]? The way that they overproduce their announcers, I think it would drive Mike Goldberg crazy. If you get an announcer from another world who’s got 15 years of real broadcast experience and you put him in that WWE announcer position, I mean, they may be able to survive it but they’re gonna go nuts.”
