Last year, we saw WWE try to rejuvenate both the United States and Intercontinental Championship by putting them on top guys like John Cena and Daniel Bryan, and while they weren’t able to bring prestige back to the IC Championship — mainly because Daniel Bryan suffered a career-ending concussion, which forced him to relinquish the title — Cena’s US Title reign was probably the most compelling thing in WWE last year.
According to a report by Forbes, which contradicts an earlier report made by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, John Cena may not be in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship picture upon his return, and there’s now speculation that he could be the next challenger for the Intercontinental Championship.
While Cena has seemingly done everything in his WWE career, there is one thing he still hasn’t done, and that’s win the Intercontinental Championship.
Cena is scheduled to return to WWE television on the December 27 episode of SmackDown, which will take place in Chicago, Illinois. So, Cena’s return will probably be met with a ton of boos. But, there is one guy that could save the former fifteen-time world champ from being booed, and that’s The Miz.
WWE is rumored to be doing an Undertaker vs. AJ Styles WWE World Heavyweight Championship feud, which will kickoff in January. So, while The Phenomenal One and The Deadman are doing battle over the blue brand’s main prize, John Cena’s next goal could be to give some meaning back to the Intercontinental Championship.

Miz and Cena do have a history with one another. In fact, they main evented a WrestleMania together back in 2011. So, a Cena vs. Miz feud wouldn’t be anything new. But, what would be new is seeing the guy who is arguably WWE’s biggest star holding the IC title.
Whether people love him or hate him, the main thing is, people pay attention to John Cena, and everything he does has a major impact. We’ve already seen WWE add some prestige to the US title on Raw by giving it to Roman Reigns, but will they do the same on SmackDown by having Cena win the IC title? They should, especially if he’s not going to be in the WWE Championship picture anytime soon.
