WWE fans have been calling for a Roman Reigns heel turn for over two years, but Vince McMahon hasn’t given into the fans’ demands, and there are several reasons why. In fact, one of those reasons was brought up on Monday’s Wrestling Observer Radio with Bryan Alvarez and Dave Meltzer.
Alvarez: “This person says: if the [WWE] Network did not exist, and pay-per-view buys continued to fall with Roman Reigns’ push, what would Vince have done?”
Meltzer: “If pay-per-view buys had continued to fall with Roman Reigns’ push, the old Vince McMahon would’ve made a change. He made changes based on pay-per-view buys all the time. So yes, if pay-per-view numbers were dropping, if house show numbers were dropping, and Roman Reigns was the top guy, Vince would be looking for another top guy.
“The reality is, TV numbers are dropping, but they’ve talked themselves into thinking that’s inevitable and you can’t do anything to stop it, and it doesn’t matter because other consumption is up. Merchandise numbers which they do go by, [Roman] is doing well. The reality is, you have to judge based on how the money is doing, and cheers and boos are really a pretty lousy indicator of that. Roman is not a big success by any means, but they will tell you that he is. He’s also not a failure, and he is the best guy for that spot, but that’s also because he’s been given a hell of a lot more opportunities for that spot than anybody else.
“When they boo him, Vince is back there going like ‘they really care a lot.’ That’s gonna make them push him more. It’s the silence that will get him. The only way it’s gonna change is if people stop buying his merchandise, and silence. Booing him will only make him stronger.”
So, there you have it. Maybe try sitting in silence the next time he comes out, because it might force WWE to make a change.
Do you think silence will force Vince to change his mind on Roman? Or do you think he’ll push him even if the crowds are dead-silent during his matches and segments? Let us know in the comments below, or over on Facebook!
