AJ Styles is currently the number one contender for the United States Championship, as he’ll face the winner of the Chris Jericho vs. Kevin Owens match at next month’s SmackDown exclusive pay-per-view, Backlash. However, it doesn’t look like a US Title reign is in store for the Phenomenal One.

According to Cageside Seats, WWE is planning on having Styles return to the WWE Championship picture following next month’s pay-per-view, where SmackDown’s main title will be defended in a match between the champ Randy Orton, and the challenger Jinder Mahal.

Styles has been eager to work with Orton ever since he came to WWE last year, and while they have had one encounter on a recent episode of SmackDown, they haven’t yet had a big match on pay-per-view.
