Last year, WWE began a tradition to honor the late great American Dream Dusty Rhodes with a tag team tournament.
The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic lasted for over a month and featured several teams throughout WWE and was won by the team of Finn Balor and Samoa Joe at NXT Takeover: Respect in October.
According to a report from DailyWrestlingNews.com, there is a lot of talk within WWE to make the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic an annual event in NXT and on the WWE Network.
The tournament served as a tribute and did an outstanding job of rebuilding and shaping NXT’s tag team division and much more.
Balor and Joe winning the tournament lead to the latter’s heel turn and set them up for the next two Takeover specials and eventually Joe’s NXT title victory over Balor two weeks ago.
Not only that, but several tag teams gained significant momentum during the tournament. For example, The Revival were able to defeat The Vaudevillains who were the NXT Tag Team Champions at the time.
They rode that momentum all the way until Takeover Dallas a few weeks ago where they dropped those titles to American Alpha, who also gained a lot of popularity from the Dusty Rhodes Classic.
Do you think it’s a good idea to have the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic every year?
