1. Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels
Royal Rumble 1992, Wrestlemania 12, Survivor Series 1997
The most important rivalry in WWE history. This is the feud that set WWE on the path to even get to Stone Cold vs. The Rock. A rivalry and a bitter hatred that would last for 17 years and three generations of wrestling history. HBK vs. The Hitman created generations of wrestling fans and made history in a way that no other trilogy of matches ever have to date, and probably never will again.
It began very quietly at Royal Rumble 1992 with Shawn Michaels challenging for the WWE Championship, but Bret Hart would be the better man on that night. Everyone at the time knew that HBK would be back. Four years later, Wrestlemania 12 was the famous Ironman match and the night Michaels’ boyhood dream came true.
The Montreal Screwjob that was mirrored a year later by Rock and Foley would occur at Survivor Series 1997. Honestly, there isn’t anything more that can be written, spoke or thought of to signify that match and it’s importance to wrestling history.
Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels is simply put, the greatest wrestling trilogy of all time because it not only shaped wrestling and created it’s future. It’s was modern day Achilles vs. Hector. It’s what the best wrestling hopes to be.
