2. Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. The Rock
Wrestlemania 15, 17, 19
It’s the most popular rivalry in WWE history, but it’s also arguably, the best rivalry in WWE history. There have never been two men so drastically different in every way that were still somehow made to wrestle one another. Their trilogy ranged over two different eras of wrestling history and shaped it’s future.
After Foley and Rock fought to the death just to get to Wrestlemania, Stone Cold Steve Austin had fought to the death just to get through Mr. McMahon. By Wrestlemania 15, when they finally locked horns; you knew that a great history of two epic careers was being made before your eyes.
Two years later, both men were at their absolute best and did battle once again at Wrestlemania 17. This time it was far more personal and was not only about the WWE Championship. It was about pride, jealously and the final great drive of two of the best to ever wrestle to finally find out who has more desire to succeed. By a less than a hair, it was Austin.
Another two years later at Wrestlemania 19, Austin and The Rock fought for the third time at Wrestlemania, but for Stone Cold, it would be the last time. After losing twice to Austin, The Rock would finally defeat him with three Rock Bottoms to put the final stamp on Stone Cold’s career.
In the first match, The Rock was heel and Austin was the face. By the second, they switched. At the final match, they had switched again. That proves the versatility of both wrestlers and the four year length of their trilogy shaped the future of sports entertainment forever.
