6. CM Punk vs. John Cena
Money in the Bank 2011, Summerslam 2011, Night of Champions 2012
The Summer of Punk couldn’t have been as big as it was if not for John Cena. Cena would have been a full year wait for The Rock and Wrestlemania without Punk. These two needed each other in the worst way and it wasn’t until Punk dropped the Pipebomb heard around the world that everyone realized it.
Their first match at Money in the Bank rejuvenated the world’s interest in WWE. So much so, that WWE cashed in one of the best angles they’ve ever had at Summerslam less than a month later to sell the PPV. Their rematch and eventual third match over a year later in Boston was the perfect trilogy to cement Punk. It started in Punk’s Chicago, went to LA and finished in Cena’s Boston.
Granted, their match in February to face The Rock at Mania was their official last match, but that one was about Wrestlemania. It wasn’t about changing wrestling. At the start, Punk and Cena had one goal. By their last, they had changed wrestling forever.
