This was the perfect rivalry at the perfect time in late 1998 and early 1999. Everyone knew that Stone Cold vs. The Rock at Wrestlemania 15 was coming, but WWE needed to fill a gap between the fall and the spring. A winter full of The Rock vs. Mankind was the driving force that eventually began a major turning point in the Monday Night Wars with the infamous, “That’ll put some butts in the seats” line.

Their feud began at Survivor Series when The Rock turned heel in a year retelling of the Montreal Screwjob. At the time, The Rock was thriving as a face and Foley was a heel, but it was an organic turn that after Survivor Series the fans got on board with both turns and soon after the feud took off to unbelievably brutal heights.
