Recently, Bret Hart had some praise for Curtis Axel. The Hitman elaborated and made the claim that his talent is being wasted, and WWE officials are putting him in the best place to succeed.
Admittedly, Bret Hart can be overly critical sometimes about some things. Having said that, this is a situation where I’m inclined to agree with him one hundred percent. Curtis Axel has a lot of talent that is being wasted.
It would be easy to blame “the machine” for Axel’s struggles, but the powers that be have tried to get him over in the right way. When he debuted officially debuted as Curtis Axel, he was revealed as a “Paul Heyman Guy” and became the Intercontinental Champion.
He was overshadowed because it’s not exactly easy to live to up CM Punk and Brock Lesnar. Since then, he’s been floating around in tag teams, but he’s been in The Social Outcasts for awhile now.
It’s a solid role that gets him on WWE television more often than he was before, but Bret Hart is right. Axel is capable of so much more, and the answer has been right in front of him the entire time.
Curtis Axel reusing the “Mr. Perfect” gimmick could be an amazing idea that just may get him over to become a major player in the midcard title scene again.
No one else is going to be able to use the gimmick since it is a legacy. Not only that, but the “Mr. Perfect” character would be nostalgic for many older WWE fans and fresh for the new generation to experience it for the first time.
It’s a classic heel gimmick, and could be the thing that makes Curtis Axel a star. Sure, it’s not the most original way to get over, but it’s an asset to a great performer of the past to pass onto his son. That’s a good story too.
