That would make a change. WWE is in a weird place at the moment as the audience for their television shows continue to fall, but the company continues to make more money than they know what to do with. Most of this money comes from the company’s huge television and streaming deals. The biggest of all of these deals was the television deal to broadcast SmackDown on FOX, but what is coming after that one?
In an interview with the Wrestlinginc.com Daily Podcast, WrestleEconomics’ Brandon Thurston said that WWE may be shopping around SmackDown’s television rights in the next few years. Based on WWE President Nick Khan’s statements on the WWE earnings call, Thurston believes SmackDown will be shopped around to Apple and Amazon for the next television contract. These negotiations would likely take place in 2022 and announce the new deal in spring 2023. WWE’s five year deal began in October 2019 and lasts for five years.
Opinion: I would be more surprised if this did not happen, as Apple and Amazon are huge companies with all kinds of money. Even playing FOX against the two of them could drive up the next television contract, as SmackDown is the kind of show that could draw an audience almost anywhere. Various companies would be interested in having them around and Khan certainly seems smart enough to understand that idea, which could be very profitable.
