The classics always work. Titles are the easiest way to book a wrestling feud. You don’t need a personal issue or some kind of creativity. All you need is someone holding a belt and someone who wants to take it from them. That is something anyone can understand and it can make for a very easy story. We are going to be seeing it again soon and it could involve quite a few different people.

We are fresh off of WrestleMania 37 and that means it is time to start getting things going all over again. That is the case with several new champions, as the show featured multiple title changes. Those new champions are going to need something to do and one of them seems ready to get going. However, it is an idea that got off to a bit of a false start this week.

This week on Monday Night Raw, Sheamus, the new United States Champion, agreed to bring back the US Open Challenge. This means that Sheamus is going to issue an open challenge for a shot at the United States Title every week on Monday Night Raw. Sheamus issued the first challenge this week with Humberto Carrillo accepting, though Sheamus attacked him before the bell and there was no match.

This is a rather violent way to go. Check out the open challenge and its inspiration:

Sheamus attacks Humberto Carrillo: Raw, April 19, 2021

Dean Ambrose answers John Cena's first U.S. Open Challenge: Raw, March 30, 2015

John Cena vs. Neville – United States Championship Match: Raw, May 11, 2015

Opinion: This is one of those things that is always going to work because a title match is always going to have instant stakes. I’m not sure where Sheamus is going with his version of the Open Challenge as he attacked Carrillo before the match could start, but maybe that will change in the weeks to come. Sheamus refusing to defend the title could be interesting, especially when he finally has to put it on the line. I’m curious about the idea, but we might have a little while before it gets going.
