What a unique tribute. Hell In A Cell has been around for a very long time now, with the first edition taking place over twenty three years ago. The idea was a rather simple one: take two people and lock them inside of a really big cage so they can beat each other up. Granted that’s the idea in theory only, as it is a lot more rare to see people stay inside the Cell. Even the first match ever featured the wrestlers escaping the Cell, and that played into this year’s main event as well.

Hell In A Cell has come and gone and it is one of the more unique shows of the year. As usual, the show was built around its namesake match with three editions taking place on one night. That is a different way to go and the matches were certainly presented in different way. One of the matches featured the customary big fall, and it turns out that there was some history in mind.

According to Wrestling Observer Radio, Drew McIntyre dropped off the Cell during his match against Randy Orton in a tribute to Shawn Michaels making almost the same fall against Undertaker in the first ever Hell in a Cell match. McIntyre remembered the crash from watching it in 1997 and wanted to recreate it. Orton went on to defeat McIntyre to win the WWE Championship.

They both worked. Check out both matches and crashes:

Opinion: That was a rather nice idea though I’m not sure how well it came across. The crash did look like Michaels’ from 1997, but it wasn’t mentioned on commentary and it wasn’t exactly the same thing. Still though, points for McIntyre coming up with a call back like that and thankfully it wasn’t hammered into our heads to make the whole thing seem stupid.
