It happens to a lot of people. WWE is a large and powerful wrestling company but it has rules for its workers to follow just like everywhere else. If one of those rules is broken, there is a good chance that someone is going to get in trouble as a result. Now a top WWE star might be confirming a fan theory that a major change in his character was the result of a punishment.

Kofi Kingston made his main roster debut in 2008 and was billed from Jamaica. The following year, Kingston dropped his Jamaican accent and was billed from Ghana, his real home country. At one point, Triple H asked Kingston if he was supposed to be from Jamaica. A fan referenced this incident on Twitter, saying that he had heard the change was punishment for Kingston answering a phone call from Vince McMahon in his real voice instead of his Jamaican voice. Kingston responded to the tweet, as can be seen below.
The story I heard was this was during a time when Kayfabe was still around, and apparently Vince or one of the other company guys had called Kofi and Kofi answered with no accent. So this was a way to embarrass him on tv.

This was an interesting one. Check out the incident, plus the two versions of Kingston:
Opinion: I’m not sure if that is Kingston acknowledging that the story is true or just getting to chuckle at what someone said, though it is certainly an interesting story. Having Kingston suddenly change everything was certainly a big switch but it is something that had to be done given how over the top the Jamaican accent was. Kingston went on to have quite the career and a lot of that comes from the change he made.
