A Rhodes by any other name. The battle between WWE and AEW has gone from non-existent a few years ago to a rather interesting fight over the last few months. The companies are competing in a variety of ways and it has been rather interesting throughout AEW’s history. There have been various battlegrounds and one of them have been in a trademark office, which has seen a bit of a change.
One of the more interesting battleground areas has been over who gets to use various names. WWE held several trademarks after WCW went out of business but allowed a lot of them to lapse. AEW picked some of them up, mainly the ones invented by Dusty Rhodes, whose son Cody is an AEW Vice President. Notice that it’s Cody and not Cody Rhodes, as WWE fought the name in a trademark issue. However, that has since changed a bit.
According to Heel By Nature, WWE has canceled its trademark application for the name “Cody Rhodes”, meaning that Cody would be free to trademark it for himself if he chooses to do so. This comes after a trademark battle between the two sides over the summer, with Cody saying he could use the name if he chose to but never actually used it. There is no word on if Cody plans to use the name.
Cody is quite the star in AEW. Check out what he has been doing as of late:
Opinion: This is good to hear as WWE holding back the name was kind of ridiculous. People know who Cody is and who his dad is, so it’s not like “Cody Rhodes” was some amazing WWE creation. It isn’t like it’s something that is going to make much of a difference so WWE is only going to come off as petty. If WWE is going to be horribly hurt by Cody being allowed to use the last name that people know him by, they have more worries than they are going to be able to solve.
Should Cody change his name? Did WWE do the right thing? Let us know in the comments below.
