History has been made! While they might not mean as much in some cases, a big time title change can mark the changing of the guard for a wrestling promotion. You never know when you might see something huge go down and shake up a promotion in the blink of an eye. Some of them are predictable but others can come out of nowhere. Another one took place this week and it was a big deal.

Traditionally, the longer a title reign lasts, the more important it is. That can make for some major title defenses, but the biggest moment of them all is when the title actually changes hands. It is the kind of change of the guard that can shake things up a bit, which can be the case in any promotion from the top levels of WWE down to the smaller indies. It is the case in the middle as well, which was the case this week.

This week on NXT, Keith Lee defeated Adam Cole to become the new NXT Champion, ending Cole’s reign at a record 404 days. The win makes Lee a double champion, as his North American Title was also on the line. Lee earned the right to challenge Cole by successfully defending the North American Title in a triple threat match against Finn Balor and Johnny Gargano on the June 24 NXT.

It was a huge moment. Check out some of the title match and the post match reactions:

Opinion: This is the kind of thing that had to happen eventually as Cole had held the title for so long. It opens up more doors as Cole was running out of major challengers to face for the first time and now Lee has several more wrestlers to face over the next few months. For now though, I’m curious about what happens to Cole, as there is little left for him to do other than move up to the main roster. Good luck once he gets there, as it could be a huge success or a complete disaster.
