They need to hurry. There are very few wrestling series going today on the level of NXT Takeover. The series has been running for the better part of seven years and tends to receive quite the strong reviews with one instant classic after another. We are coming up on the next edition of the show and that means it is time to start cranking the card out. NXT did quite a bit of that this week.
Titles are one of the main focus of NXT and that makes a lot of sense. Putting a title on the line is an easy idea to set up a match because the feud tends to write itself. You can change things around after that though with various twists to the match, which is what NXT does very well. They did it well again this time around, with multiple title matches being set up this week.
Two title matches for NXT Takeover: Vengeance Day were announced on this week’s television show. First up, NXT Champion Finn Balor will defend against Pete Dunne, who challenged him to the match. Next was North American Champion Johnny Gargano, who will defend against Kushida, as ordered by General Manager William Regal. This joins the already announced Women’s Title match and the two Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic finals on the card.
The matches look good on paper. Check out how we got here:
Opinion: This is the kind of change that can turn a card from just ok into a great one and the show is suddenly mostly set up. NXT shines at doing something like this and they have done it again. I’m not sure how well the show is going to go, but at least they set things up in a hurry and we have a card with a lot of intrigue. That’s not a bad use of two hours as the card is suddenly complete rather than having some big holes.
