The background information. No matter how great a wrestler is, at some point they are going to have to hang up their boots. It might not be the happiest news in the world, but every wrestler is going to walk away eventually. Sometimes that can be a bigger deal than others, but you can often see the signs that the end of their career is starting to get ready. One WWE legend looks ready to walk away, and one step is out of the way.
Rey Mysterio may be the greatest lucha libre star in American wrestling history. He has certainly become a major star and one of the biggest names in WWE history, but it is clear that his best days are behind him. Mysterio is currently in a big feud with Seth Rollins and attempting to bring his son Dominick into the wrestling business, but he is doing it without a contract. Now we know a little more about that.
According to Wrestling Observer Radio, Mysterio’s contract expired months ago but he has stuck around for the sake of his feud with Rollins. Part of the problem between the two sides is Mysterio wanting a raise, but Vince McMahon said he could not afford one at the moment due to the company’s financial status. McMahon pointed out all of the roster cuts made back in April to prove how things have been going. The sides are still negotiating a new deal, though Mysterio would be allowed to appear anywhere at any time.
Mysterio can still go in the ring. Check out some of his recent matches:
Opinion: As much as some other promotions would love to have Mysterio around, I can’t imagine him going anywhere else. He is a legend in the company and can still wrestle at a high level. Throw in the fact that WWE seems willing to allow Dominick to get his feet wet in the company and there is little reason to imagine Mysterio leaving. I’m sure he is tempted at times, but WWE is the right place for him.
