Consider it the replacement. We are coming up on WrestleMania 36, which is far more than just a one night event. WrestleMania is now a full weekend of shows and festivities with a little something for every wrestling fan. That makes for a big weekend and one show tends to receive some pretty high praise. That would be NXT Takeover, and now we know one of the show’s matches. Kind of.
Earlier this month, NXT took another step towards equality with the main WWE shows as 2020 Women’s Royal Rumble winner Charlotte agreed to face NXT Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley at WrestleMania 36. That’s a heck of a match and a big deal for NXT, but it leaves a bit of a hole in the card for Takeover: Tampa. However, NXT managed to solve that problem with a simple idea.
This week on NXT, General Manager William Regal announced a tournament to crown a new #1 contender to the NXT Women’s Title. The tournament’s qualifying matches will begin on the March 5 edition of NXT with the finals taking place at Takeover in a ladder match. There have been no specifics announced for the tournament, including the number of participants or any names.
Regal knows how to get things going. Check out the whole setup:
Opinion: I like the idea and you can more or less pencil in Dakota Kai vs. Tegan Nox for the finals. This should be a fun tournament if they keep the field small enough. Having a ladder match for a future title shot will be fine in lieu of a standard title shot and under the right circumstances (read as Kai vs. Nox), we should be in for a good fight with something on the line.
How do you see the tournament going? Who will get the title shot? Let us know in the comments below.
