It makes a bit of sense. The end of this year’s WrestleMania saw Drew McIntyre slay the beast and become the new WWE Champion. The win was a changing of the guard as McIntyre’s road to the title took a long time to make it all the way to the main event. Being the champion is a lot different than trying to be the champion, and McIntyre found that out on Monday for a good reason.

At the end of Monday Night Raw, a video aired showing a clip from after WrestleMania. The Big Show came to the ring to challenge McIntyre to an impromptu title match. McIntyre survived the challenge and retained the title in his first defense, though it was a bit of a strange moment. It turns out that WWE had a specific reason in mind for doing things as they did.

According to PW Insider Elite by way of Wrestlinginc.com, the thinking behind having McIntyre face Big Show as soon as WrestleMania went off the air was to make McIntyre look like a giant slayer. WWE made it clear that the matches were taking place less than half an hour apart, meaning McIntyre would be severely weakened before he faced Big Show. McIntyre’s next opponent is not currently known.

It was a double feature. Check out McIntyre’s two matches:

Opinion: I wasn’t thrilled with the idea of the title match taking place on Monday Night Raw in the first place but at least there is a reason for what they were doing. What matters most is that they didn’t do anything insane like having McIntyre lose the title so soon. You never can tell what kind of strange choice they could make so this could have been a lot worse, which is always a positive.

Which match was better? Did the WWE’s plan work? Let us know in the comments below.
