Conor McGregor may be the latest UFC fighter to get his name in front of the WWE audience, but his trash-talking of the modern roster has earned him little favor among wrestling fans–or the locker room.
Far more popular is Ronda Rousey, who has repeatedly expressed her admiration for the world of sports entertainment. Not only is her “Rowdy” nickname a tribute to the late, great Roddy Piper, she’s made repeated appearances at WWE events. First at ringside during 2014’s SummerSlam, then inside the ring along with the Rock at WrestleMania 31.
Rousey’s appearance as a WWE wrestler has been rumored for so long that it almost inevitable, with even the legendary Nature Boy penciling her in for a WrestleMania appearance. With MMA fans expecting her upcoming match against Amanda Nunes to perhaps be the last, those rumors won’t quit.
Stephanie McMahon, master marketer, is adding fuel to that fire. In a recent USA Today interview, McMahon said “Our fans love Ronda.” She added, “Ronda has this cross platform appeal in terms of all forms of entertainment. We would welcome her with open arms. She is the total package.”

On Rousey’s WrestleMania appearance, Stephanie said “The moment was awe inspiring. Our business works the best when there is magic and energy in the air, and Ronda’s presence brought that. With a guest appearance like Ronda’s, to work best it has to be genuine and authentic. Pop culture is a huge strategy for WWE, our storylines are reflective of what’s happening in the world and what’s popular. In sports, it doesn’t get much more popular than Ronda.”
The pieces are in place, so don’t be surprised if “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey has a “shocking” announcement to make following UFC 207–win or lose.
