Of all the headlines I might’ve written today, “the Rock makes a movie about Paige” is among the most unlikely. But it’s true, and it presents some very interesting questions for WWE.
Paige is part of an English wrestling family who runs their own promotion. The family was already the subject of documentary that aired on the UK’s Channel 4 called The Wrestlers: Fighting With My Family, and the Rock says that program served as the inspiration for the upcoming film.
In a Facebook post, Rock said “Years ago (2012) while shooting Fast & Furious in London, I was up at 3am (too much caffeine) and stumbled upon a documentary on a UK station about a local wrestling family and their daughter’s unlikely journey into the global spotlight. That daughter, is current WWE Women’s Superstar, Paige. The family element I saw in the doc, is what grabbed my attention. That no matter how crazy life gets, no matter how dysfunctional our families can sometimes be and especially regardless of how much we fight – we’re always there for each other when it counts. That’s what families do.”
Dwayne Johnson’s production company, Seven Bucks Productions, will be handling the film in collaboration with WWE Studios and Film 4. Stephen Merchant, best known as the co-mastermind being the original Office, will be writing, directing, and executive producing.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Rocky will be making a cameo as himself alongside stars Florence Pugh and Jack Lowden.
Given the controversy around Paige, including her relationship with former WWE star Alberto del Rio and a surgery that went unapproved from WWE officials, the idea of an officially sanctioned film about her life raises all sorts of interesting questions regarding her role in the company.

She’s been a fixture on Total Divas, but even before she ended up on the shelf because of the surgery her role within WWE was shrinking. It’ll be interesting to see how the company treats her now that she’s the central character in a Rock-backed motion picture.
Looking forward to the film? Let us know in the comments below, or on Facebook!
