NXT superstar Sami Zayn has been confirmed as “cleared to compete” at “NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable.” WWE Executive Vice President of Talent, Live Events, and Creative Triple H broke the news during a phone conversation with WrestleZone columnist and “Chair Shot Reality” host Justin LaBar on May 19.
As previously reported, Zayn was injured during his “Monday Night Raw” singles match debut against John Cena on May 4. While hyping up the crowd on the ring-steps, as he normally does, Zayn tweaked his shoulder, which was further injured during the United States Championship match with Cena.
After a week of uncertainty regarding Zayn’s status for “NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable” on May 20, where he will face Kevin Owens for the NXT Championship, Zayn claimed that he would be facing Owens at the event during the final edition of “NXT” before the WWE Network special. However, no official statement had yet to be made regarding Zayn’s status for the event.
Triple H told LaBar through their phone conversation that Zayn has come a long way, and is becoming such an amazing talent. He praised Zayn for being able to go from a character in a mask, to showcasing some of the best facial expressions of any superstar in the ring.
He also said that Zayn has indeed been cleared to compete at “NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable,” and will be challenging Owens in what will likely be their last match opposite each other while in NXT. Zayn is expected to make the move to the WWE main roster possibly before “SummerSlam” in August.
Editor’s Note:
GOOD. The main event is confirmed, and we’re getting closure to this chapter of Zayn vs. Owens so that Owens can move on to Bálor, Breeze, Rhyno, etc. So stoked for May 20!
