New reports claim the release of “WWE 2K15” may be delayed because of CM Punk. As previously reported, Punk’s attorney’s have recently issued a 22-page letter to World Wrestling Entertainment in regards to royalties and their use of his name and likeness in the upcoming video game, which may put the release of the game on hold until further notice.
According to Gameranx.com, WWE and 2K Sports may have a serious issue on their hands in regards to Punk. As previously reported, legal action against Punk, real name Phil Brooks, may be taken by WWE soon over breach of contract.
While no lawsuit has yet be publicly filed, WWE has felt Punk disrespected the company in some manner since his departure and they are now withholding royalties from the former WWE Champion. Many believe that this is why Punk’s attorney’s have merely sent the company their 22-page document.
Gameranx.com reports,
“2K Sports, Yuke’s and Visual Concepts started work on WWE 2K15 before these issues even came up. 2K Sports may have planned for CM Punk to take a major role in the 2K Showcase Mode from the start.
However, there is another factor in this issue, and that is theWWE 2K payouts to wrestlers. Just last April, Mick Foley explained that he would not be renewing his WWE Legends contract over low royalty payments from figures and videogames. He did know about THQ’s dissolution, and how it affected his royalties. Still, he was disappointed enough that he chose to opt out.
Unlike Foley, CM Punk has already been added into the game, so this is a situation 2K Sports and the WWE will have to deal with. The most positive outcome for fans would be for the three parties to settle amicably and immediately, so that it would not delay release.”
Currently, the game could be on hold until all camps come to some sort of agreement. With the release date set at only a little over a month away, this situation could pose major complications unless settled quickly.
If WWE refuses to pay Punk, and Punk’s attorney’s state Punk cannot be featured in the game, then 2K is going to have to modify one of its major selling points to “WWE 2K15,” the “Showcase” mode, which is currently designed around two rivalries. CM Punk vs. John Cena, and Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels.
“WWE 2K15” is scheduled for domestic release on October 28 to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. WrestlingRumors.net will keep you updated on this story as it progresses.
