The latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter is claiming that there is a reason behind Triple H’s sarcastic promo on “Monday Night Raw.” During the July 21 edition of the company’s flagship program, Triple H addressed the WWE Universe, poking fun at the Internet Wrestling Community and their attack of WWE “Battleground,” and the WWE product in general, online.
Triple H made several sarcastic comments during his promo discussing his anger towards the fact that John Cena retained the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at “Battleground.” He initially says that he is going to “tweet his displeasure” over Cena retaining because he’s so mad about it, poking fun at the IWC’s tendency to use Social Media as their platform to speak their mind about the product.
He goes on to continue making fun of the fans that use Social Media in his “Reality Era” promo, saying that he may go as far as to “send an Instagram or a Vine,” before heading back to joking about Twitter. He went on to say that he’s going to use “as many characters as he gets” on Twitter to threaten to “riot” if he doesn’t get his way. He even says that if that doesn’t work, then he’ll claim that he and his friend “Mark” are going to stop watching the product.
The use of “mark” was not incidental, but intentional. The term “mark” in the wrestling world eludes to someone who is incredibly passionate about and devoted to professional wrestling. Some fans can take their love for the sport to the extreme, which is when they are usually labeled “marks.” Smart fans, ones that know the insides of the business but have probably never stepped foot inside of a ring are sometimes referred to as “Smarks.”
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer states that this portion of Triple H’s promo was simply made to poke fun at and insult those fans that complained about “Battleground,” because it wasn’t the “amazing” Pay-Per-View that they hoped it would be. He also notes that it is well known in the back, that Triple H generally hates Social Media. This is why it took him so long to create a Twitter account.
However, it is understood that he had to embrace Social Media for business purposes, even though he hates the fans online that constantly complain about the product.
Editor’s Note:
I was THOROUGHLY entertained by Trip’s promo on Monday night. I thought it was hilarious. Some marks DO actually offer nothing but negativity to the product…yet they watch EVERY TIME it is on…and it frustrates ME, and I’m not even an executive for the biggest wrestling promotion in existence. I can only imagine the annoyance it proves to be for them. I’m all for voicing your opinions, though. That’s the beauty of America. So if you want to complain but still watch all the time, complain away.
