New reports have provided a possible update on Sami Zayn’s injury and main roster status with WWE. As previously reported, Zayn injured his shoulder during his “RAW” singles match debut on May 4 prior to his bout with United States Champion John Cena.

Zayn answered Cena’s open challenge during the episode, and was introduced in front of his hometown crowd in Montreal by WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart. Initially, Zayn’s appearance on the program was rumored to be his WWE main roster debut, but new reports claim that he may not be joining main roster newcomer and fellow former NXT Champion Neville just yet.

Dave Meltzer initially stated that Zayn was likely making his main roster debut during the program, because he was slated to work further television dates before suffering his shoulder injury. However, he’s now saying that Monday night was not supposed to be his main roster debut, but merely a surprise appearance to hype NXT’s next big WWE Network special, “NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable.”

In the most recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer claims that the word backstage is that Zayn may miss a few months in the ring, which would mean he would miss “NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable.” Zayn is currently slated to face NXT Champion Kevin Owens for the title at the event on May 20.

PWInsider recently noted that Zayn may have torn his rotator cuff, which could require surgery. If an endoscopy is performed, his arm would have to sit in a sling for two-to-three weeks, then he would have to spend the next few weeks undergoing physical therapy to fully recover from the injury.

While Zayn’s official status and health has yet to be confirmed by WWE, with little-to-no update from the company about his status since his MRI on May 5, it would seem that the news is not good and they’re taking their time in deciding what they need to do to replace him at “NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable.” More than likely, the winner of the No. 1 Contender Triple Threat Match between Finn Bàlor, Hideo Itami, and Tyler Breeze will then face Owens for the title later in the evening.

Editor’s Note:

Welp…as long as he gets completely healthy for his return, he’ll still shine upon his addition to the main roster, and he’ll have a great match with Owens at possibly the next NXT special.
