Vice Sports has produced an interesting, in-depth look into the rise of the global entertainment phenomenon known as World Wrestling Entertainment. In the report, author Ian Frisch discusses the departure of Shane McMahon from the company back in 2009.
Shane had been an executive with the company several years before this, but left because he wanted to pursue other “other business opportunities.” However, the resignation was actually partially due to a real-life power struggle with his father, Vince and sister, Stephanie.
“There was always tension between Shane and Stephanie,” a former senior-level executive, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told me. “That tension hasn’t gone away.”

Later in the article, Frisch discusses a moment in 2012 in which Shane called a meeting to return to the company. He, along with other people noticed that things in WWE were problematic, as Vince was on edge due to low ratings.
Vince called an emergency meeting, which was to include Shane. Apparently, Shane had the meeting set up through Kevin Dunn, WWE’s executive vice-president of production.
“When Stephanie found out Shane was going to be there, she went white in the face,” the source told me. “And Paul (Triple H) freaked out.”
“Kevin Dunn is very close to Shane,” the source said. “And there’s tremendous tension between Kevin, and Paul and Stephanie. They feel like the company is theirs, but they don’t have power to control Kevin.”
Shane wanted to take control of creative, including the writers room in order to bring the company back to prominence. Vince eventually declined the offer, and it wouldn’t be until February 2016 that we would see “Shane-O-Mac” back on TV.
Editor’s Note:
None of this surprises me at all. When you are running a multi-billion dollar empire 365 days a year, tensions and egos can get in the way of good business judgement. Combine that with personal agendas of family members, and things can get ugly really quickly. However, everything seems to be working out just fine for now, and we as WWE fans should be happy about that.
