This is only a rumor at this point, so take it for what it’s worth. According to the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE and Sky Sports in the UK will no longer be in business together, as WWE is expected to announce that it is moving to BT Sports in January.
The news was first reported by The Telegraph last week.
It had been previously reported that AEW will be entering the UK market and will begin broadcasting its live show on ITV 4 in October. As a result of these two moves, AEW would have a far superior television outlet, in what has been the second biggest revenue producing country for WWE behind the United States.
In fact, with live events and selling merchandise, the UK has been the No. 2 overseas market for many years.
WWE has some pretty great things going on in the UK right now:
There is talk that WWE will be getting a huge rights fee increase from India, and if so, even with very little revenue from live events, network fees or merchandise, the television revenue alone is expected to make India the No. 2 market starting in 2020.
Editor’s Thoughts:
I don’t think that this will mean a whole lot, as most fans get their wrestling content from the internet anyway. That being said, it is always tough when long business relationships end, and I know that Sky Sports has been a part of the wrestling game for a long time. Hopefully they will still be able to air programing in some capacity!
