Tonight at “Backlash,” the unthinkable happened, and Jinder Mahal defeated Randy Orton to become the WWE Champion for the first time.

Ever since the Maharaja won a six-pack challenge a few weeks ago on “Smackdown Live” to earn this opportunity, social media has been abound by people who feel that Mahal left above many deserving people on the roster to get this opportunity. And now, he is at the top of the WWE mountain.

However, in my opinion, Jinder Mahal deserves an opportunity to show us what he can do as the WWE Champion.

Randy Orton vs. Jinder Mahal - WWE Title Match: WWE Backlash 2017 (WWE Network Exclusive)

It’s no secret that Mahal had a rough time his first go-around with the company, and was released by WWE in 2014. He had said in a previous interview that he had even hit rock bottom a couple of months before he made his return two years later.

However, since his return, he has been a changed competitor. Triple H has even said that he has matured in many ways, and that he is taking the ball and running with it.

Why does Mahal deserve a chance? Because it’s something different. It would be easy to put the title on someone like AJ Styles or Kevin Owens, but that’s predictable. And as a result, the fans would complain that the younger stars, like Jinder, will never get their opportunity, because the WWE writers are lady and just want to recycle storylines.

The bottom line is that he has worked his butt off, and has been doing outstanding work since becoming the new No. 1 contender. And at the end of the day, both Orton and Mahal gave it their all, and gave us a great wrestling match with a shocking ending. Isn’t that what we want as wrestling fans? To be surprised and entertained?

People will immediately take to social media to complain about it before even giving it a chance. Yet, how many times has Vince McMahon given us an unpopular opinion and then it ends up turning into gold?

And besides, the fact that social media is blowing up, and this result is causing a huge reaction, proves that WWE got it right. I don’t know how many times I’ve said it (hint: it’s a lot), but I’ll continue to say that any reaction is a good reaction. It’s the Roman Reigns theory of professional wrestling, that will never go away.

Congratulations, Jinder Mahal, on making it to the top of the mountain and winning the WWE Championship. I hope that you prove all of the haters wrong, and show why you deserve to be the man.
