According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, even though WWE decided to give the World Heavyweight Championship to Sheamus at “Survivor Series,” the long-term plan is to get the belt on Roman Reigns and have him be the face of the company.

The feeling within WWE is that many fans see Reigns as the ‘corporate’ choice to lead the company, which is why he is receiving a negative reaction at many pay-per-view events and TV tapings. The current plan appears to be to keep screwing Reigns out of the title, which will ideally get fans behind him, and make his eventual world title run be seen as a good thing.

His reaction is getting better, as he has been cheered more on television, both during his entrance and in his matches. WWE officials hope to keep this momentum going and build him up in the eyes of the fans, before pulling the trigger and giving him the title.

Editor’s Note:

The smart thing to do here, in my opinion, would be to have him embrace the negative reaction and become a full-fledged heel. It has worked for other superstars in the past who had began receiving an organically negative reaction from fans, and once embraced, had the best runs of their careers (i.e. The New Day).
