During the “NXT Takeover: Brooklyn” special event on Saturday night at the Barclays Center, Bayley captured her first championship in WWE by defeating Sasha Banks to become the fourth Women’s Champion in the brand’s history.
As a show of respect to the newly-crowned champion, some fans decided it would be courteous on their part to start throwing streamers in the ring to honor Bayley. Fans in Japan did so during the “Beast in the East” special event when Finn Balor and Kevin Owens made their entrances for the main event.
Security reportedly intervened and escorted the aforementioned fans from their seats, eliciting a negative response from those around them.
They weren’t kicked out of the building, though, as they were eventually allowed to return and watch the Ladder match for the NXT Championship between Balor and Owens.
Fans even started a “YES!” chant once they realized the problem had been resolved gracefully.
Following a Coup de Grace from the top of the ladder, Balor climbed the rungs once more and brought down the NXT title to emerge victorious over Owens – who will fight for a second-straight night at “SummerSlam” Sunday when he goes one-on-one with the “Swiss Superman” Cesaro.
Conflicting Report: The streamers incident may have taken place during the entrance of Finn Balor and Kevin Owens instead. Either that, or it happened on two different occasions.
Editor’s Note
Tossing streamers at in-ring competitors is a time-honored tradition in professional wrestling, and one I wouldn’t mind WWE leaving the door open for at NXT events. Triple H is all about making NXT a standout show that doesn’t feel like “Monday Night Raw” or a pay-per-view, so why not? Things will get a bit messy, and perhaps WWE doesn’t want to waste any time having to clean up the mess. I suppose that’s fair, if true.
