The WWE Network was a pretty big game changer for the WWE. It allowed them an avenue for a lot more original programming than they could have ever gotten within the traditional cable model, and it also made getting pay-per-views to their viewers a lot simpler, not to mention cheaper. However, the WWE Network can’t merely rest on its laurels, and it doesn’t seem like they are going to be complacent. It seems like the online network might become a bit more of an offline enterprise in the near future.
Netflix, the biggest streaming company in the world, made a splash when it announced they would allow users to download some content, so they don’t have to only watch online. It seems the WWE wants to follow in Netflix’s footsteps. Michelle Wilson, speaking on behalf of the WWE at CES, said that downloadable content and offline viewing are “definitely on the roadmap” for the network.
Obviously, things like NXT and pay-per-views, i.e. things that air live, will never be able to be viewed offline. However, the WWE Network is always talking up the large catalog of wrestling content they have available on the network. It wouldn’t be surprising to see some of that become downloadable when the time comes.
