On Tuesday’s Smackdown, Daniel Bryan made a big announcement related to the feud between Becky Lynch and Alexa Bliss. The two women are scheduled to, once again, face off for the Smackdown Women’s Championship, but this time they will be doing it in a La Luchadora-free steel cage. Inspired by the rare spectacle of a women’s cage match, here’s a throwback to an old school cage match between two legends who are, in their own way, still active.
The match in question is not just a steel cage match, but a Hell in a Cell match that took place on RAW way back in 1998. This was at the height of the Monday Night Wars, and clearly the WWE wanted to pull out all the stops by having Kane and Mankind square off in what was only the fourth Hell in a Cell match ever. Obviously, Kane is still around, although his look and character has changed in the ensuing decade. Mankind has shed the mask, and even the long hair, and is now known as RAW General Manager Mick Foley.
Sure, Becky versus Alexa isn’t quite a Hell in a Cell match, but it will be cool to see them square off in a steel cage. Until then, though, this blast from the past can help tide you over.
