You may not even remember it at this point, but Shelton Benjamin was being teased as returning to WWE, specifically to Smackdown, in 2016. Those plans hit a snag when Benjamin tore his rotator cuff, which put him on the sidelines indefinitely.
This has not stopped some from speculating that Benjamin will be one of those classic surprise entrants in the Royal Rumble. However, Benjamin has taken to Twitter to put any stop to the speculation about him appearing at the Rumble.
Benjamin tweeted, “Recovery is going well. Still months away from anything physical so all the RR predictions are as accurate as they’ve been the last 6 years.”
When somebody tweeted at Benjamin that if he was going to be a surprise entrant, this is what he would say, which is classic logic, Benjamin shut that down quickly.

It seems pretty clear Benjamin won’t be in the Royal Rumble match. It’d be a great place to make a return, but a rotator cuff tear is a serious injury that takes a while to heal. Eventually, Benjamin will make his WWE re-debut, but it’s not going to be in January.
