Over the years, dozens of wrestling video games have been released. Some, like WWE No Mercy for the Nintendo 64, have been great. However, they can’t all be brilliant. Some are mere OK, and some are disasters. One of those disasters was WCW Backstage Assault.
Backstage Assault came out in 2000, at the height of hardcore wrestling’s popularity. This is made clear by the gimmick of the game. There is no ring. This may be a wrestling game, but it doesn’t feature and real wrestling. Everything happens backstage. There are a few different backstage rooms to fight in, and plenty of weapons to use.
However, as you can see in this video, the game looked cheap, and the gimmick of the game got boring quickly. Generally speaking, you should have a wrestling ring in a wrestling game. Being able to hit Scott Steiner (or Corporal Cajun!) with a lead pipe only goes so far. Many things about WCW went awry back in the day. WCW Backstage Assault is but one of the issues they had at the turn of the millennium.
