Smackdown ended 2016 with a bang, announcing John Cena versus AJ Styles for the WWE World Heavyweight Title at the Royal Rumble. Sure, we’ve seen Cena against Styles before, but they put on a great match at Summerslam, and it’s still a pretty huge bout. However, before Styles versus Cena was booked for Royal Rumble, the WWE was reportedly planning on giving Styles another notable opponent; The Undertaker.
Yes, according to PWInsider, the WWE was thinking of having Styles take on The Dead Man for his title at Royal Rumble. Obviously, anytime The Undertaker’s name comes up, it’s going to turn heads. They made a huge deal out of him showing up at Smackdown just to deliver a little speech to the brand’s Survivor Series team, and yet the fans were really into it. Alas, the Styles-Undertaker match will not be happening for whatever reason. That reason may be that The Undertaker is a 51-year-old man who is clearly worse for the wear and barely ever wrestles. He’s the ultimate part-timer. While it would have maybe been a little cool to see, Styles against Cena should work perfectly fine.
