If you ask people what the most notable thing to happen in Apollo Crews’ WWE career is, they would probably say that time Daniel Bryan called him “Apollo Creed” on accident. This is not a good thing. Sure, he’s had a couple matches for the Intercontinental Title, and even scored a win over The Miz at Tribute to the Troops, but there are also weeks where he doesn’t even appear on TV. That’s not something that happens to upper level, main event-type wrestlers. Crews is sort of floating in a netherworld right now, which is a shame. If any wrestler on the WWE roster is just one step away from being something big, it’s Crews.
Crews has the same problem a lot of good, but generic, athletes have had in the WWE. He’s genuinely really impressive in the ring. He’s big and strong, but fast and agile. However, he actually has wrestling skills. He’s not an athlete trying to make it work as a pro wrestler. Crews is fun to watch in the ring. He also has a good look, and good energy. Crews has shown a hint of personality in his ringwork, but it’s only a hint.

That’s the thing Crews is missing. He doesn’t have that hook yet. “Great wrestler” doesn’t cut it unless you are a well-known name with some major indie cred. Crews isn’t that. His mic work is middling, at best. He doesn’t really have a gimmick. Crews is just a guy who wrestles, and that’s going to make it hard for him to take it to the next level. Hopefully in 2017, Crews can take that step forward to make it to the next level. Having him in bigger matches would benefit Smackdown, and he can finally move past being the guy that gets called “Apollo Creed.”
