Wrestling fans, or at least a certain segment of wrestling fans, love AJ Styles and despise Roman Reigns. Though Styles is ostensibly a heel, he gets cheered, whereas Reigns, a face, gets booed relentlessly. However, there is at least one person who seems to be a fan of Reigns, and that’s Styles himself.
Styles was recently interviewed by AL.com to promote an upcoming live event in Birmingham, Alabama. The good Southern boy that Styles is, he was happy to answer questions for the website, including a question about his favorite match of 2016. Styles had a lot of notable, great matches in 2016, but it’s his work with Reigns that he singles out in particular, saying, “I just felt like my matches with Roman Reigns set the tone of how AJ Styles was going to be presented in 2016, like this guy who gets after it and has great matches with just about anyone on the roster.”

Beyond that, Styles also talked about the fact that, despite being a heel, he gets a lot of love from the crowd. Even though the cheers are a sign of people’s love for Styles as a performer, he’s actually not too happy about it, saying:
“Sometimes I feel like if I’m not getting people to boo me, then I’m not doing my job right. So that’s on me. I need to be better about being the bad guy. And sometimes they just refuse. These fans just refuse to accept me as the bad guy. That has a lot to do with how much time I spent outside the WWE and coming here and doing so well, they respect that, I guess you could say. But it’s up to me to make sure that these fans find a way to boo me.”
Of course, saying something like that is probably only going to make people like and respect Styles more, so it likely won’t lead to fans booing him more. Then again, if he keeps talking about how much he enjoyed working with Reigns, maybe that’s the key to getting booed.
