Back when John Cena was getting his feet wet in WWE, he also began to launch a successful music career for himself as a rapper. The man once known as the “The Doctor of Thuganomics” released his debut album in 2005 in partnership with WWE, titled “You Can’t See Me.”
For some of his work back in the day, Cena collaborated with fellow Boston rapper Esoteric, who was a recent guest on the “Asked” talk show with Riv and Landin. Within the interview, Esoteric revealed an interesting proposition, that John Cena had pushed to turn heel “about five years ago.”
According to the rapper, Cena wanted to return to his “Doctor of Thuganomics” character full-time, likely sometime between 2009 and 2010. Esoteric claimed to have helped Cena write the heel turn angle, though it would end up being shot down by WWE management. Although, two years later, during the build to his first encounter with The Rock at WrestleMania 28, Cena portrayed his rap persona for the first time in more than five years.
Listen to Esoteric’s appearance on “Asked” below. The rapper also talked about helping Cena write some of his earliest battle raps for WWE in 2002 and 2003:

Editor’s Note
I wouldn’t be surprised if Esoteric’s claims are true. I’m sure Cena has pushed for a heel turn in the past, but it will likely not happen until WWE finds another face of the company.
