Curtis Axel was not on WWE programming during most of September and all of October, mainly due to his former tag team partner, Ryback, being sidelined due to a lingering hernia issue. Axel had been working with the “Big Guy” as part of the RybAxel tag team, which found little success, and was mainly utilized as a “jobber” team. With Ryback on the shelf, Axel would only wrestle in dark matches every now and then.
Now that Ryback made his return to the squared circle, Axel has done the same, as expected. On the Nov. 4 edition of “Main Event,” which is exclusively shown on the WWE Network, Axel returned by facing Justin Gabriel in singles action. Axel would obtain the victory with a bit of a running knee lift, while Gabriel was groggy. Michael Cole, who was on commentary for the bout, noted that Axel was away due to an “injury.” Additionally, Cole mentioned that Axel is claiming that he is here for the long haul and better than ever.
This marked the first time that Axel competed on WWE programming since the Sept. 1 edition of “Monday Night Raw.” On the show, Axel lost to Jack Swagger in singles action. With Ryback being pushed as a monster babyface once again, expect Axel to try to rejuvenate his singles career as well.
Editor’s Note
I don’t see anything major coming from Axel anytime soon, but it would be nice if WWE tried to give him another notable run.
