On Tuesday, July 15, WWE officially removed CM Punk from its active roster. Soon after, CM Punk posted a tweet, thanking his fans. Way back in January, Punk confirmed that his contract would be expiring in the middle of July. Many different dates have been reported on when exactly Punk’s contract would come to an end, but it appears that it did on July 15. PWInsider has provided an update on the everlasting situation, mentioning the backstage vibe of the situation heading in to Tuesday.
The website reports that prior to Tuesday, word within WWE was that things were turning around between CM Punk and WWE. With the WWE Network “Beyond the Ring” special and AJ Lee’s return, some thought the two sides had hashed things out. However, it is now evident that was not the case.
Following the July 14 edition of “Monday Night Raw” in Richmond, Va., tensions between the two sides reportedly got worse. In fact, some within the company believe that the relationship was as worse as it ever was.
Additionally, the website notes that many people within WWE find it interesting that WWE heavily pushed CM Punk’s “Beyond the Ring” special on Monday and Tuesday. These people are surprised that WWE would remove Punk from the active roster on the same day the WWE Network special premiered.
Despite CM Punk not wishing to work for WWE, Vince McMahon had the ability to renew Punk’s contract, similarly to how he renewed Rey Mysterio’s. However, the company would choose not to, which likely allows CM Punk to work on projects in the near future. The “Best in the World” has already teased some, including a podcast.
Editor’s Note
It doesn’t really surprise me that the two sides were’t able to come to anything. Though, what is surprising, is the rumor that the relationship got even worse leading up to Punk’s contract expiring.
