For a short period of time in 2011, CM Punk was the hottest star that the company had seen in years. He ended up being the first, and the only guy to outperform John Cena in merchandise sales since Cena became a main event star over a decade ago. He also became the longest reigning WWE Champion of the current era, as he held the title for over 400 days. But, since his abrupt exit from the company in January of 2014, WWE has been doing their best to make you forget about CM Punk.
Their latest attempt came in a poll, where they asked their fans who The Undertaker’s greatest WrestleMania opponent was, and every opponent was listed, with the exception of CM Punk. They did, however, acknowledge that the Phenom had a match at WrestleMania 29, but they don’t mention CM Punk at all.
Even though it’s been over three years since he left, the two sides still have a ton of animosity towards each other, and it doesn’t look like they’re going to make amends anytime soon.
Opinion: WWE should just acknowledge CM Punk when it makes sense, and the fact that they don’t just gives the fans a reason to chant his name. If they acknowledged his time in the company, the chants wouldn’t completely stop, but they’d happen far less frequently. Most fans probably enjoy chanting his name because they feel like they’re getting away with something, or because they want to put the people who are performing in an awkward position.
