According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the original main event for January’s Royal Rumble show was going to Brock Lesnar defending the WWE Universal Championship against Finn Balor.

However, on Monday morning, WWE chairman Vince McMahon changed his mind, and Meltzer explained why on the post-Raw edition of Wrestling Observer Radio.

“The Royal Rumble main event was scheduled to be Brock Lesnar vs. Finn Balor for the Universal Championship,” Meltzer said. “I was told that the official change was made [on Monday morning] but it was talked about [on Sunday]. Vince McMahon felt that Finn Balor wasn’t over enough.”

We don’t know who will replace Balor as Lesnar’s opponent at the Royal Rumble, but there’s a chance that they could go back to Lesnar vs. Braun Strowman, or Lesnar vs. Samoa Joe.

Of course, all of this will lead to Lesnar defending the Universal Championship against Roman Reigns in the main event of next year’s WrestleMania in New Orleans.
