When former WWE Universal Champion Finn Balor was injured back in August, the original prognosis for his return was six to eight months. But, everyone is hoping that he’ll be ready to return much sooner, and that he’ll be a surprise entrant in the 2017 Royal Rumble match.

Finn Balor recently spoke with ESPN about his injury, his recovery, and a possible return at the Royal Rumble, which he didn’t exactly rule out.

“It’s not something I want to risk unless I’m 100 percent confident that this [pointing to his injured shoulder] is 100 percent.

“With the condition my shoulder is in, I’m not willing to risk sustaining any more long-term injury, just for the sake of two or three weeks. Since I got hurt, it was six months. The target was to be back for WrestleMania. Everything’s on plan, everything’s on schedule.

“If the day of the Royal Rumble, Vince McMahon says, ‘You got your gear with you?’ Then I’m sure I’ll be around.”

When Balor was first injured back at SummerSlam, we knew that it was a pretty significant injury. But, when he underwent shoulder surgery at the tail end of August, doctors found out that his injury was much worse than they had originally thought.

Prior to the ESPN interview, Balor said multiple times — most recently on the Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast — that his target return date is WrestleMania.

If Balor does return at the Royal Rumble, he’ll have recovered a full month ahead of schedule. But, if he doesn’t return on January 29, expect to see him back around February or March, as WWE begins the road to WrestleMania 33.
