A lot of people were pleasantly surprised when The Bulgarian Brute won the Gauntlet Match on SmackDown Live this week. Now, he’s set to challenge AJ Styles for the WWE Championship at Extreme Rules. First of all, the audience was tired of Styles’ feud with Shinsuke Nakamura. More importantly, the fans have been behind Rusev for months.
There’s been a lot of speculation about WWE officials trying to kill the “Rusev Day” team on SmackDown Live, so his sudden push into the WWE Title picture is a move most fans didn’t see coming. However, the WWE Universe has to reconsider the likelihood that the WWE Title will change hands at Extreme Rules with Summerslam around the corner.
According to a report from RingSideNews, there’s a logical reason for Rusev’s title shot at Extreme Rules Before Rusev became the No. 1 Contender, there was a rumor that AJ Styles would start a feud with Samoa Joe. However, it seems WWE officials are holding off on their feud for Summerslam. On paper, it seems very unlikely that Rusev will win.
Brad Shepard commented during “Backstage With WWE” that WWE officials are trying to do something different with The Bulgarian Brute and allow him to have his moment in the sun based on how much “Rusev Day” has gotten over with the WWE Universe. It’s also convenient to keep AJ Styles busy for a month before the rivalry with Joe can begin.
Unfortunately, there is a huge difference between being someone who can challenge for the WWE Championship and being a guy that WWE officials will actually let carry their top championship in the company. Not winning the title is not the most important thing for Rusev right now. Extreme Rules is a huge step forward to turn him into that guy.
