Sometimes, a creative idea gets lost or misunderstood because it isn’t presented in the right way. For example, if The Shining Stars had been talking about wrestling in Puerto Rico, wouldn’t that have been better?
Instead, they spoke about food, nightlife, and everything else under the sun that has nothing to do with wrestling. Then, WWE officials were surprised when the group flopped on WWE television.
What did WWE creative think was going to happen there?
Now, the same thing is happening with Darren Young. The “Let’s Make Darren Young Great Again” gimmick was strange from the moment we saw it. We’ve been dealing with weeks and weeks of vignettes that are meant to be humorous, but not too many people are “getting it.’
According to a report from DailyWrestlingNews.com, Young wrestled The Miz during a WWE live event in Huntington, West Virginia, but Backlund’s ringside antics didn’t go over well with the audience at all.
The reason people aren’t getting it is simple. If the goal is to make Darren Young “great again,” didn’t he have to be great at one point? No offense to him, but he’s never had strong momentum as a character in WWE.
Now, the character isn’t working, and he has yet to be seen on WWE programming. If WWE is going to make this gimmick work, they’re going to need to do something soon.
Do you think the Backlund/Young vignettes are funny?
