I‘ve never liked David Otunga. He’s just not someone I see with a lot of potential, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t of value to the WWE product. He’s had non-wrestling roles in the past. Now, he’s transitioned into an announcers role on SmackDown.
The problem is that he’s not very good at it. Mauro Ranallo and JBL is a good combo, but Otunga isn’t adding anything aside from backward logic. How many times has he criticized a heel for an action and then praised a face for doing the same thing?
Apparently, I’m not the only one who feels this way because NXT’s Tom Phillips is being brought to SmackDown’s announce team. Simply put, four guys is way too many for one announce team. In my opinion, Otunga is the weakest link and it’s time to say goodbye.
There’s another thing about Otunga that bothers me. The WWE Universe knows him as a former wrestler and one of the original members of The Nexus stable. However, he didn’t accomplish a lot, which really makes his commentary ineffective.
A former wrestler at the table should have something to say because they had success in the ring, or he must have some great insight or analysis, but Otunga doesn’t have either of those things. I’m just not seeing why he’s a better option than Tom Phillips.
What do you think of David Otunga at the announce table?
