On SmackDown, The Usos took out Chad Gable of American Alpha and reopened the doors to the finals of the SmackDown Tag Team Tournament for “Backlash.”

It’s been rumored between The Usos or Heath Slater and Rhyno about which team will become the first SmackDown Tag Team Champions, but there is more to the story with American Alpha.

By booking the “injury” angle, WWE has only postponed American Alpha’s rise to the top of WWE’s Tag Team scene and potentially gained them some more sympathy from the WWE Universe.

According to WrestlingInc.com, Gable has suffered an MCL injury that will keep him out of the ring for two to four weeks, which should give everyone enough time to figure out where the storyline is going.

The expectation is Gable and Jordan will be out for revenge on The Usos for robbing them of the Tag Team Titles, and the expectation is the latter team will the be the SmackDown Tag Team Champions by then.

Obviously, WWE thinks of American Alpha as the long-term team to build, so we’ll see how long it takes for WWE pull to the trigger. They may be thinking Wrestlemania, but that’s a long way away.

Do you think American Alpha is the next big tag team in WWE?
